The Sound of Music

Holiday in Mondsee, near Salzburg, in the footsteps of the von Trapp family from “The Sound of Music” will bring you back in the early 20th century but with the comfort and standard of the 21st century…

Who hasn’t heard about the von Trapp family? Who hasn’t seen the movie “The Sound of Music”? Who doesn’t know songs like “Edelweiss” or “The hills are alive”? Probably everyone knows “The Sound of Music” with their famous actors Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer.

Imagine being at the places where the family lived, where movie scenes have been taken in 1965 and where the locals are still used to wear “Dirndl” and “Lederhosen”. And that’s not all – the impressive landscape of Salzburg and its surroundings with the mountains and lakes is unique.

In Salzburg many scenes of the movie were taken, for example the beginning, when Maria Augusta Kutschera began to work as nanny and home teacher for the family of Georg von Trapp. (The wife of Georg von Trapp died a few years earlier because of scarlet fever). Some years later Maria founded a family chorus with the children and gave many concerts. Some of the songs are introduced in the movie.
When you arrive in Salzburg, the atmosphere of the city and the wonderful view will blow you away.

Seize the opportunity and visit some film locations like the castle “Schloss Frohnburg”, which was the Villa of the von Trapp family or the “Mirabellgarten” where Maria and the children were singing “Do-Re-Mi” or the cemetery St. Peter where the dramatic escape was filmed. The von Trapp family had to escape in the 30s and went to America where they made concert tours under the name “Trapp Family Singers”. Later they opened a hotel in Stowe, Vermont, which is now called “The Trapp Family Lodge”. But let’s return to the movie…

… What about the wedding scene? Can you remember? You will at the latest when you come to Mondsee, only 30 minutes away from Salzburg. Mondsee, a very nice town with a history of 6000 years, including a UNESCO world heritage site, is located at Lake Mondsee in the Salzkammergut region. In the heart of the town center, right at the market square, the basilica of Mondsee is located, where the marriage scene of Maria and Georg von Trapp was taken. Nowadays the basilica is very famous and many couples marry in Mondsee. But that is not only because of “The Sound of Music”! Mondsee offers much more…
