Questions and answers on the topic of "Holidays with my four-legged friend"

[ Can I take dogs to public bathing areas? ](#ttgNCECollapse370928)
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Dogs are not permitted on public bathing areas, with the exception of service dogs of the police and rescue services as well as guide dogs, assistance dogs and partner dogs, insofar as this is necessary for the fulfilment of their task.

There are [free lake access points](https://mondsee.salzkammergut.at/aktivitaeten/mein-sommer-im-mondseeland/baden/artikel/detail/3095/baden-mit-hund.html "Link öffnet sich in neuem Fenster") at Mondsee where bathing with dogs is permitted.

[ Do I have to keep my dog on a lead in the local area? ](#ttgNCECollapse370929)
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Dogs must always be kept on a lead in public places in the local area. The obligation to keep dogs on a lead applies to all roads, pavements, footpaths, parks and sports facilities within the "Ortsanfang" and "Ortsende" signs. Playgrounds, cycle paths and footpaths are also considered public places in the local area.

[ Is a dog allowed to run free in the forest or must it be kept on a lead? ](#ttgNCECollapse370930)
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

According to the Upper Austrian Dog Keeping Act 2002, dogs are not generally required to be kept on a lead in forests. However, every dog must be supervised, kept or led in such a way that neither people nor animals are endangered by the dog. The dog owner is responsible for the dog's behaviour at all times and everywhere. **It is recommended that dogs are kept on a lead, as their play instinct can easily be aroused by startled game (deer, hares, birds, etc.).**

Forestry law and hunting law must also be observed in the forest. Away from public paths and roads, it is therefore always necessary to come to an agreement with the landowner in advance as to whether the dog may be taken into the forest. We also strongly recommend that dog faeces be removed.

[ Are dogs generally allowed in guest houses, etc.? ](#ttgNCECollapse370931)
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Whether dogs are permitted in restaurants and in which areas they are allowed is not a question of the Upper Austrian Dog Keeping Act 2002.

The owner of a catering establishment can regulate himself which persons are admitted and whether dogs are allowed and in which areas they are allowed.

In hotels/guest houses/private landlords, dogs are generally not permitted in dining rooms/breakfast rooms during mealtimes.

[ Do I have to dispose of my dog's faeces? ](#ttgNCECollapse370932)
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Here, § 6 Para. 3 of the Upper Austrian Dog Keeping Act 2002 stipulates that dog excrement left by dogs in public places must be removed immediately and disposed of properly by the dog owner.

Furthermore, the Road Traffic Act also imposes an obligation on dog owners to remove dog faeces. The prohibition of soiling public roads, pavements, footpaths, pedestrian zones and residential streets with dog faeces and the obligation to remove them as well as the fine for failing to do so are governed by the provisions of the Road Traffic Regulations.
**As dog faeces are extremely harmful to grazing animals and wildlife, it is strongly recommended that faeces are also removed from meadows and fields.**

[ Entry requirements with a dog in Austria ](#ttgNCECollapse370933)
----------------------------------------------------------------------

\- EU pet passport and microchip identification

\- a valid rabies vaccination (at least 21 days old)

[ Can my dog travel with me in a gondola or cable car? ](#ttgNCECollapse370934)
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

For their own safety and for the protection of other passengers, dogs must be muzzled and kept on a lead in the gondola and on the Schafbergbahn, for example.

[ What do I and my four-legged friend need to consider at the accommodation? ](#ttgNCECollapse370935)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

To ensure that your holiday is a relaxing experience for you and your four-legged friend, the following points should be observed:

\- Dogs are not allowed on sofas/chairs/beds or similar

\- Dogs are not permitted in breakfast rooms

\- Keep your accommodation clean

\- Report any damage immediately

Even if your dog has its freedom at home, you should remember that this accommodation is also booked by guests without dogs who do not want to sleep in a bed where a dog has already slept.

**The details should be clarified with the landlord before booking.**

[ Why are there businesses that do not allow dogs? ](#ttgNCECollapse370936)
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Unfortunately, the landlords have had many bad experiences with dogs in the rooms. Dogs are allowed to sleep on the bed, sofa, armchair and the like. It is not uncommon for the mattresses to have to be cleaned or replaced.

For a good co-operation we ask for consideration.

[ Is dog liability insurance necessary? ](#ttgNCECollapse370937)
-------------------------------------------------------------------

Animal liability insurance protects you against financial consequences. Dog liability insurance pays for damage caused by your dog to third parties.
