European protected area Mondsee In 1992 the European Union issued the so-called Fauna-Flora Habitat Directive. It lists landscape types, as well as plants and animals, which are considered to be particularly worthy of protection. Based on this guideline, the state of Upper Austria issued an ordinance in 2006 according to which the Mondsee, the Attersee and some tributary rivers were designated as European protected areas. The regulation was revised in 2015, supplemented by a landscape conservation plan.
