Mondsee-Irrsee: A lake full of history dating back to the Neolithic Age.

For over 1,000 years, the monastery has been a source of culture that is more alive than ever. Dialect is spoken here and music floats in gentle waves across the lake.

Nestled between Schafberg, Mondseeberg and Drachenwand, the picturesque market town of Mondsee lies on the shores of the lake of the same name. Settled by pile dwellers as far back as prehistoric times, this beautiful spot has developed into a cosmopolitan place with a wide range of possibilities. Whether swimming in the crystal-clear water, hiking or cycling in the low mountain range landscape - there is something for everyone here. Mondsee is also ideal for a family holiday on a farm.

Mondsee's little brother, the Irrsee, is completely protected. It offers nature lovers, those seeking relaxation and romantics the long-awaited balance to stressful everyday life. Rare animal and plant species such as the curlew and corncrake can be observed on its shores.

The special beauty of the region is best discovered on the numerous hiking trails around the Mondsee and Irrsee lakes. While the hilly landscape on the north side of Lake Mondsee and Lake Irrsee slopes gently down to the shore and invites you to enjoy leisurely hikes, the rugged peaks of the Northern Limestone Alps rise up in the south to form a spectacular mountain backdrop.

From the three highest peaks - Schafberg, Drachenwand and Schober - you can enjoy the best views of the lakes. On a clear day, you can even make out some of the neighbouring lakes. Particularly impressive is the crescent shape of the Mondsee, which is best seen from the top. The icing on the cake is the turquoise-blue water of the Mondsee, in which the silhouette of the mountains is reflected in small waves.
