Monte Carlo game Mondsee:
It is called "Monte Carlo", but takes place in Mondsee and has heralded the start of Lent in MondSeeLand since the beginning of the 19th century: The traditional Monte Carlo game.
It is highly likely that the game of chance was introduced by the occupying soldiers in Mondsee during the French Wars. In reference to the Monegasque casino town, it was given the title "Monte Carlo" game. Since then, it has been held annually, with the exception of one interruption during the Second World War.
From the Weißes Rössl to the Leitnerbräu
The original venue was the Weißes Rössl in Mondsee. When this closed, the game moved to the Leitnerbräu, where it has been held annually ever since. The day of the event is always Ash Wednesday. This is probably due to the fact that there used to always be a herring feast on this day and people used to go to the game afterwards.
The rules of the game
At tables of 4 to 10 people, who each form a playing group, one participant is chosen as the spokesperson. This person raises cards, which are later drawn again. In 2 rounds, 32 cards (14 pairs, 4 single cards) are auctioned from each table. The money collected is broken down into 30 different amounts and allocated back to the cards. 2 rivets give the game the necessary tension. This results in winnings and losses. These are shared equally by the players at the tables, just like Walter Scheel: "Nothing happens without risk, but nothing happens without risk".
However, the tide can quickly turn again in the coming year - winners become losers and losers become winners.
New participants in the Monte Carlo game can only be invited by active players. Invitations to the game are sent via the Hotel Leitnerbräu. Spectators are welcome!
