150 km of hiking trails, gentle hills, striking mountains, and a truly unique panorama – the Mondsee-Irrsee region offers something for families, leisure hikers, mountaineers, and climbing enthusiasts alike.

In the northern part of the region, around Lake Irrsee, you can enjoy nature on relaxed and scenic walking paths. Further south, our mountains – Schober, Drachenwand, Almkogel, and Schafberg – are waiting to be conquered. At the summit, you’ll be rewarded with breathtaking views.

Important information
decent via ferrata

The Drachenwand via ferrata is one of the most popular in the Salzkammergut. At the same time, the combination of the demanding ascent and the dangerous alpine descent makes it a very serious affair for climbers. Due to the beautiful view of the Mondsee during the ascent and on the summit, the Drachenwand via ferrata is a must-do for many via ferrata climbers.

What many do not know: once you have reached the summit, you have not yet managed the via ferrata. A descent is waiting for you, in which you have to cover a total of 650 vertical meters and in which you must not make a single mistake over a difference of 500 vertical meters.
If you make a mistake there, it can have serious consequences.

ATTENTION!

The Hirschsteig (the only way to descend from the via ferrata) is an alpine climb of the highest level of difficulty. Surefootedness and a head for heights are basic requirements for starting on the via ferrata!

Unfortunately, climbers die every year on the descent. The main reason is overconfidence, the thought "I have already done the via ferrata, nothing else can stop me ...", poor condition and lack of equipment. Please spare our operations organizations, especially the great volunteer members of the mountain rescue service in Mondseeland, from these stressful operations.

Please estimate at least 4 hours for your tour. Last access to the via ferrata is 5 hours before sunset. Do not undertake the tour when it is wet.

The via ferrata is not suitable for children under the age of 14 or beyond that without sufficient alpine experience!
