Film set, place of pastoral care, architectural masterpiece or basilica minor - the Basilica of St. Michael in Mondsee is the centre and landmark of our community.
A landmark whose 65-year-old roof surface was severely damaged by a storm with massive hail in the summer of 2021.
The roof is no less than 70 metres long and 34 metres wide - the equivalent area of around 30 detached houses. So it goes without saying that a new roof for this church is no walk in the park in terms of craftsmanship, but of course it is also not easy to afford.
To be precise, the new roof made of 146,748 slate shingles will cost around 4.3 million euros. The majority of this sum has already been raised by the insurance company, diocese, parish priest, state, parish, association for the promotion of the basilica and the Federal Monuments Office.
The parish of Mondsee is asking for support to finance the rest and thus support the renovation of the church roof.
For a donation of €10.00, you can get a virtual roof shingle on the website of St Michael's Basilica, on which you can immortalise yourself with a photo, name and a personal dedication. In return for this donation, you will receive a (delicious) gingerbread shingle in the monastery shop as a small thank you - you can find all the information here.
If you would like to follow the progress of the construction work on the roof of the basilica online, you are welcome to view our live webcam for the roof renovation or browse through the construction diary .
