Mondsee-Irrsee

A lake with history. And has been since the Neolithic Age.
1,000 years of monasteries as a source of culture that is more alive than ever.
Where everyman speaks dialect and music sounds out onto the lake in gentle waves.

Nestled between Schafberg, Mondseeberg and Drachenwand, the market town of Mondsee lies picturesquely on the shores of the lake of the same name. This beautiful spot on earth was already settled in prehistoric times by the so-called pile dwellers and has developed into a sophisticated village with a variety of possibilities - be it for swimming in the crystal-clear water, hiking or cycling in the low mountain landscape or for a family vacation on a farm.
Lake Mondsee's little brother, Lake Irrsee, on the other hand, is completely protected and therefore offers nature lovers, those seeking relaxation and romantics the long-awaited balance to stressful everyday life. Rare animal and plant species such as the curlew and corncrake can be observed on its shores.
The special beauty of the region is best revealed to visitors on one of the numerous hiking trails around the Mondsee and Irrsee lakes.
While the hilly landscape on the north side of Lake Mondsee and Lake Irrsee slopes gently down to the shore and invites you to enjoy leisurely hikes, the rugged peaks of the Northern Limestone Alps rise up in the south to form a spectacular mountain backdrop.
